Saturday, July 27th: Dog on a Plane

Saturday was traveling home day.

We went into three airports and two airplanes. My dog, Lanie, ran me into one of the ribbons on those helpful lining object. I'm talking about those poles on either side and a ribbon in the middle to help folks line up properly and know where to go.

She just about ran me into a sign but just barely missed it. [Editor's note: Dad says she wasn't really that close to the sign.] I'm so happy she didn't run me into that sign. I only knew this because Dad informed me of it. We walked so fast in the airport! I think that's the fastest I've gone through an airport. Well, maybe not but faster than with my cane in the past. I tend to go slower with my cane in an unfamiliar place.

Lanie seems to like going on the moving walkways. Dad took either pictures of that or videos. It's easier to take videos, for sure when moving. We rode escalators, as well. She was so good on the planes. She didn't make a sound. I remember Dad expressing to Mom, "You wouldn't have known there was a dog on the plane."

On the second plane, I had to go to the restroom. The stewardess was very nice and spoke directly to me. She thought I needed help. I decided I didn't need it. I informed her I'd try with the dog. Interestingly, we fit in the tiny bathroom. We just barely did, though. I was kinda surprised at that. I'm grateful she could fit in there.

We finally made it back to Birmingham, Alabama! We drove some and then we stopped at a Mexican restaurant. While trying to enter the restaurant, I just about tripped on a piece of wooden parking blocks. Lanie is still working on guiding me and she went right over it instead of stopping. We entered the restaurant. The employees thought the dog wasn't allowed in the restaurant. Dad spoke to her in Spanish. He informed her, in Spanish, "You could get a ticket for not letting the guide dog come in." The lady spoke another person. Maybe, this other person was a manager. She thought the same thing and then the first lady decided to call someone. The person on the other side of the call apparently knew the law. They let her know she was allowed for us to come in with my guide dog. They finally let us sit down and eat. After that, the employees were very nice to us. My dog was very well behaved. Of course, she is supposed to, anyway.

Lastly, Dad and I arrived back at our apartment. Sisters and Mom were happy to see me. I touched Malia [our other dog] and the second I did, I was so shocked. Her fur felt prickly. She felt as if she'd been shaved! I asked if she had been shaved or something. Mom answered, "No." It probably was because of being away from Malia for so long and taking care of a big soft dog. Malia had to figure out that Lanie was here to stay. At first, she seemed not sure what to do. She barked and growled. After a while, she and Lanie played with one another. They seem to still not know who's my dog. I will talk or give attention to one and the other comes to receive some, too. I'd say they're still working it out. They tend to fight about who gets the attention from me. Otherwise, they play and I think enjoy having someone to do so.
Saturday was quite something!

Editor's note: Photos and video to come.

Friday, July 26th: I Passed!

Friday was the last day for training.

In the morning, each girl walked the restaurant or cafe route. This time, I had my dad behind. He got a chance to see how it works when I'm walking with him sighted guide, with the guide dog. I was nervous. I made mistakes, though.

Once, there was a car that turned and I had thought to go. It was my parallel traffic. So, I decided to step back on the curb. I hadn't gone very far in the street, thankfully. I remember crying. I sure did think I had made a mistake that would help the trainers decide to take my dog. So, I was sad. I made it, though. Whoa! I got to keep my dog! Yea!
Ahbee and her dog walk in front of a cafe.
After that, I sat around outside the cafe. The others went on their routes. In the afternoon, Eric St. Pierre spoke to most of the girls. He encouraged us to keep improving. I went into my room and worked on packing my suitcase. I came back to pack after saying good byes to folks and talking to them. I finally got all ready, and Dad and I drove to the hotel. We just hung out at the hotel. My dad watched TV and I messaged Kayla and listened to music.

Friday was quite a relief! I passed Canadian guide dog training school!

Pi~nata Time!

I forgot to say that we hit a pinata.
Kate, Ahbee, Kayla, and Meredith pose with a pinata that is decorated like a dog. The dog has a colorful body, a small brown head, and eyelashes.
This was on Thursday. First, we hit the pinata with spatulas. My friend Kate, she hit it with a spatula with a rubber end to it. She warned us by saying, "I can get pretty aggressive."
Ahbee hits a colorful pinata with a big stick as a young woman looks on.
We each got the first turn. The second time, Meredith and I used a big stick. It looked like a tree branch.
Meredith hits a pinata with a big stick.
When I hit it the second time, I ended up breaking the string on the pinata. I got a chance to kick it since I'd broke the string off it. Kate kicked it once and then the second time, she broke the pinata and Kayla didn't have another turn.
She said very politely, "That's okay." Kate had to apologize for it.
Kayla hits a pinata with a stick. The pinata has a big body with a dog's head, four legs, and a yellow tail.

We picked up the candy and gum from within the broken pieces of pinata. We took the pieces and bags of treats inside and Ms. Jennifer sorted the loot. yum!

Thursday, July 25th

Thursday was very quiet. In the morning, Kayla and I stayed back in the dorm. We did our own things. The other three walked their routes. The parents followed them to understand how to guide them when having the guide dogs. They can not make short cuts. They have to go to the curb when coming out of a restaurant or building. The other thing is to walk all the way to the corner. They can not make diagonals. When we walk, it has to be straight unless there are obstacles in the way.

I hung out in my room most of the morning. I used the internet and listened to music. I played with my dog few minutes, took a small nap, and visited with Kayla.

After lunch, Kayla and I went on our routes. My dad hadn't arrived yet, but we ended up walking our route. I think Kayla's parents followed her. We got to walk the route together. We each would talk to one another about what we needed to do. The person who was more inside from the street, got to cross the street first. I had fun working with her. She and I grew very close during the training. We have some of the same similarities.

We then came back to the dorm. The veterinarian for Mira came and spoke about how to take care of our dogs. She gave us information about our dogs' shots and healthyness. It was good information! I didn't understand all of it but thankfully Dad took notes.

Then, I brought my dad to my room. I showed him around the room and answered his questions. My dad left while I was eating dinner. I'm very happy for a quieter day.
Ahbee and Kayla show big smiles of relief and gratitude. They are sitting in an outdoor cafe.
This is Kayla and Ahbee, celebrating the news that we both passed our final test. We get to take our dogs home with us!

Wednesday, July 24th

On Wednesday, in the morning, we practiced crossing streets and aligning properly with the perpendicular and parallel traffic. It was touch especially trying to figure out how to align right with the perpendicular traffic. I kept messing up. After that, I cried because I thought I wasn't going to pass the test or get my dog.

In the afternoon, we walked the cafe route but backwards. It seemed pretty easy. I did think it was easy. I'm so glad they let us look at the map.

It was cool outside. Most of us wore a sweatshirt or sweater. I was happy for the change of weather but just a little cool.Wednesday was one of the more relaxed days.

Mom's note: Just before posting this blog, I found out that she passed the test and will be coming home with a dog.

Monday, July 22nd

On Monday, we ended up doing the same route twice in the same day. In the morning, I was quite nervous. I made several mistakes. In the afternoon, I made very few mistakes. In the morning, after the route, I ended up crying. I didn't think I did well. I got over it, though. No big deal.

Interestingly enough, I did better [in the afternoon] than in the morning, and it was warmer. My dog seemed to feel like she was cooperating actually better in the afternoon. It was nicer weather than the week before. It was warm but not too warm.

In the evening, around seven, my foster family and Kate's came to meet us and to see the dog they had raised. Mine, was a husband and wife. They have either two grown daughters or just older than me. The man is from Switzerland and the woman is from England, originally. They met in the United States.

They conversed with me. They asked me questions about this and that. They wanted to see me walk with my dog, but I was told not to let them. They were disappointed, but there weren't any problems. I heard a little story about her. I got a few things she used to do. Maybe, she still does them. They wanted to stay in touch. My family has decided to stay in touch, just like they asked. My dog's foster family stayed in my room for half an hour. I am happy to have met these folks and to know more about them. It's also great to get information about my dog when she was living with them. It's great!

Making Paper Mache

Ahbee enjoys spreading paper mache on a big round base, with three other people.

Sunday, July 21

Sunday was the last full rest day. I played the piano, some. I also brushed my dog with the others. I went into Meredith's room. We had a small visit. I played tug of war with my dog. Sandy, who is a worker here, came and entertained us.

In the afternoon, I watched parts of two movies, some of the time with my friends. We watched Little Mermaid 3 and Shrek 3.

We then went on a treasure hunt, inside. The treasure ended up as being indoors s'mores. Each paper bag contained one marshmallow with two pieces of chocolate and cracker like stuff. They felt like they were stuck together. The marshmallow wasn't stuck with the two other pieces.

Kayla's and Meredith's parents came. They took them out and that's when I watched the movies.

I made sure I looked at the map. I helped Meredith with her route, as well. Four of us have the same route while one has an easier route. I'm sure glad I went over the map with her and with myself. It makes quite a difference to do so.

Yesterday's weather wasn't too bad. Thankfully, it's not very hot. In the morning, it was sorta cool. It felt good anyway for it to be cool. I enjoyed having another break!

Saturday, July Twentieth

Saturday was my last half day for training. The end is drawing near.

Anyway, we worked in St. Hyacinth. We each walked a small route. We practiced crossing the four corners in the town. We worked on aligning with the traffic properly. This time, the girls sat in the van while Ian and Pierre worked with one girl each.

There is one thing I need to get better at. It is to be confident when I tell my dog each command with energy and strongly enough so the dog hears what I'm saying as well as being confident.

We ate sandwiches and chips with sauce for lunch. Of course, I chose to eat  fresh cherries for dessert. In the afternoon, I closed my eyes for a few minutes. I tried using the internet. We had a storm on Friday. The internet hasn't worked since then. You can't do much, anyway.

Three girls covered a balloon with paper mache for our pinata. We used homemade glue. It was white flour and water, I think. It was quite a mess.

Kayla's and Meredith's parents came by. Kayla's parents just stayed here at the house. Meredith's parents took her to the mall. I got to visit with Lexi for a while after dinner. A couple of girls watched movies. I chose not to.

Saturday had nicer weather than it's been. It felt a lot nicer. In the van, it was warm but not that bad.

It stank about the internet not working. I was trying to send an email to my mom but they wouldn't come through and one email for Meredith's parents from the night before. Oh, well.

Friday, July 19th

This morning was like most mornings since going to town. Actually, first, it rained heavily early in the morning. We ended up waiting and having free time after breakfast.

We went to town, after the break. We each walked the route. Some used walky talkies and others had the trainer right alongside them. The ones who used walky talkies still had trainers near them, just farther away than before.

We ate, pork on a stick with tube like noodles and vegetables.

We then went back to town and worked in the mall. This time, it seemed like there were more people at the mall. That makes sense, though. There were so many obstacles inside the mall. I really think my dog is doing well and is learning how not to bump into things. She is getting very good! I'm very proud of my dog!

We headed back towards the door for campus, but it was raining hard, once again. We made it back, after waiting a little bit. We're all safe and sound! Thank the Lord!

No news is good news

A big storm knocked out the internet access, so we have no reports from Ahbee today. She texted me that she is fine and to let everyone know she will write when she can.

Thursday, July 18th

This morning, we went to a town that is 30 minutes away from here. We practiced crossing streets, aligning with traffic, and doing double crossings. Double crossings are when you cross straight forward to the other side and then turn and cross that direction. Three of us stayed inside the van while the other two walked the streets. We had Christian there to help us, but he was there just in case. I visited with Lexi a long time. We then got our turn.

We had sandwiches for lunch. In the afternoon, the trainers spoke to us.

We finally went to another town. It is about 5 to 10 minutes away from the campus. We each did a short little route. There were three street crossings, as well. We had to cross one street then turn right, cross that street, and finally turn right again, then cross over. I've been told, "These are harder to do." This time, we had to sit in the grass instead of a chair at table, like at the cafe.

We arrived back on campus. I went downstairs and visited with Lexi and just a bit with Meredith.

We ate meatloaf for dinner. I chose to eat watermelon for dessert, this time. Oh, yes! Last night's dinner was super! It was salmon with cauliflower and snow peas. It was pretty good. Giselle cooks so well! Mostly, she cooks the food and doesn't buy most things frozen and heat it up. Her cooking is amazing!

It's almost the end of the third week! Can you believe it? I can't! Wow! Time flies by when you're having fun or just busy.

Wednesday, July 17th

Two puppies wearing red scarves with the MIRA logo.

Today was probably the most exciting day!
Each girl got a chance to pet a puppy in the morning. Jennifer, the babysitter, from last night, brought two puppies from the halls they lived in. They were going to be partnered up with a family, sometime today. She brought us a boy and a girl to pet! They were so cute!

They were big puppies, though. They were nine weeks old but weighed around 17 or 18 pounds each. The girl one was softer than  the boy and seemed traumatized since she'd never been out of her pen. The boy hadn't either. The only thing was that he became curious and roamed around us. He kept trying to nibble at us. I remember him trying to nibble at hair. It was great to have the chance to pet one of these little puppies from Mira! I loved it!

We walked the same route as yesterday. Today, we ate shepherd's pie, for lunch. I decided to eat cherries for dessert. Yum! They were fresh, too. That makes them even better.

Next, the trainers and all the kids had a discussion about our strengths and weaknesses in mobility skills. Later, we took photographs with our dogs! We took individual pictures of each girl with her dog. After that, the whole group of girls and three trainers had pictures taken of us together! It was great! We were informed of our jobs for tomorrow morning. That might be interesting to see. Anyway, we're just hanging out, now.

Tuesday, July 16th

On Tuesday, we went into town and walked a little different route. It was mostly the same except for in the middle of it. It was very hot! Oh, yes! There was a section of sidewalk on my way back to the cafe, that had a piece of ply wood or some sort of wood, and my dog started whining in that section. It must have been too hot for her feet! All this was during the morning.

For lunch, we ate tortellini. Surprisingly, we didn't have salad or soup before that. We usually have soup or salad as an appetizer, mostly.

We then worked in the mall a little. This time, my dog went in the general direction of the escalator on her own. She didn't get on by herself but did kinda walk near it. So we ended up with practicing the escalator as one of the first objectives.

We roamed around like before. Not exactly roamed but more like just walked. We practiced food smelling and heeling in the store. It was pretty similar to the day before.

We ate steak for dinner with vegetables. It was great to practice certain things even though it was hot and we went outside. It's also good to improve with being indoors.

Monday, July 15th

Monday was interesting!

First of all, each girl placed the four corners but didn't do all four. We'd do three and then when each of us came back, we'd do it the other way around.

We sat at the North bench of the kennel. Four girls went over the route in words for Ms. Helene. It was to help picture it in our minds, properly.

We came back to do the corners the opposite direction and went to the poop square. Helene called us back when she was ready. She got a dog to practice having distractions.

We sat around. I had nice visit with Lexi. We got to try recall outside. Of course, my dog stayed right there close. They did have a leash or it could've been mine. I'm not sure, though.

We ate ham with rice and broccoli for lunch.
Ahbee and dog, with trainer Ian, at the top of an escalator, about to get on.
We drove to town. We arrived at the mall. It was awesome! We didn't get to shop but did stay inside instead of being hot outside. We practiced going through narrow doorways or tight spaces. We practiced not allowing the dogs to smell the food and how to work the the dog on an escalator. I loved learning about the escalator situation for my dog. That was the fun part, for me anyway! I do have to be very careful to not let the dog's nails caught. We also just walked around obstacles and had fun being in the mall! Thank goodness! I am so happy to have gone indoors.

I ate a hamburger and salad for dinner. It was hot! The mall was my favorite part of yesterday's class!

Sunday, July 14th

On Sunday, all of us just hung out.
In the morning, I played the piano, laughed with Meredith in our copying game, and used my phone. Sandy came and entertained us. First, we strung beads on a rubber band like string. Each girl received two big plastic beads, one metal dog shaped charm, and several little plastic beads. We didn't have enough beads to string the whole necklace, though. Ms. Silvie turned on music, as well.

We ate spaghetti for lunch with garlic bread! Delicious!

Next, at least four girls put their hands in plaster and it imprinted hand prints. The plaster hand prints were as if we were in the Hall of Fame!

I went and decided to take a nap. The nap helped me feel more energetic. I'm glad I took one. Kate came and knocked on my door. That's when I got up. She asked me, "Ahbee, will you help me with the route?" I answered back, "Yes, no problem." I informed her that I had been sleeping. She replied, "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up." I answered, "That's fine. No problem." I helped her and Lexi look at the route.

Afterward, Ms. Sandy, Meredith, Lexi, and Kate created a sound movie. We used homemade sounds. It was hilarious! The sounds we used were a helicopter, thunder, rain, fire, fish, and marshens. Kate became the narrator. Oh, yes, we also had drums and cymbals. The drums and cymbals was a pot and a spoon. The helicopter was a trash bag with air inside. The fish was water being blown through a straw in a cup. The rain was with Saran wrap by rubbing it together. The thunder was Kate's rock and fire was a paper bag with something else as chicken. There was a description that involved, "the world was burned like chicken," or something like that. We got a chance to listen to it after we acted it out. I remember we were laughing at the "mutated fish". It was awesome!

I showed Meredith the map, right after acting the sound story. By this time, Lexi and Kate got their nails painted. The three others didn't want to. Later, in the evening, Meredith and I chose to watch Tangled. Ms. Sylvie did, too.

Yesterday was so much fun! I am so  happy that Sandy came! it was great!

Editor's note: We will have to wait for the next post to hear about the mall visit.

Saturday, July 13

Yesterday was the second half day off that I've had.

We girls had to practice turning left and right as if we were doing military drills. We then packed us into vehicles and went to town. Kayla, Kate, and I were the first to work with the trainers this time. Eric came along, as well.

We did some exercises instead of walking the route. We had to cross the street and walk a few steps. We'd have to let the next person know we'd gotten across. The next person came but passed the first one and then the last person got to cross the street first. We did that more than once.

We also practiced with the dogs eating food. We each held food up to them, more like teasing them with food. We'd then correct them if they touched our fingers or hand. Next, the three of us made it back to the cafe. So, Lexi and Meredith went after us.

While sitting outside of the cafe, we drank some sort of orange drink, but the cool thing is the bottle it came in. This glass or rather bottle is made of glass and has a very nice design! We decided to bring it home with us and keep it. I suggested it being a souvenir from this cafe.

We arrived back at the campus at one o'clock. That means a late lunch. We had pork chops for lunch and vegetables that went with it.

Oh, yes! On Friday, three girls played the piano and two sang. I forgot to tell you. Anyway, I got the chance to play a bit on the piano. Four of the girls made objects with clay that Sandy brought. Sandy is a worker from here. She's been helping entertaining us this weekend and, I was told, next weekend too. I created a paw print and cross. Kayla and Meredith went outside and played with water. Kate, Lexi, and I sat in the living area relaxing.
Several girls and their dogs relax on a shaded porch.
Here we are with our dogs, relaxing outside.

We ate pizza for dinner. The others made homemade ice cream with bags but I didn't want any.

After that, Kate's dog ran away from her. She described her problem by saying, "My dog got all psychotic and she took the leash out of my hand." We finally caught her dog! Yea! Nothing bad happened. They both are just  fine. What a relief!

Yesterday, was quite hot, too. It was a hot and wonderful day!

Here are a few photos.

Friday, July 12th

This morning was very eventful!

While I was at breakfast, Eric came along. About this time, a dog came inside and all the dogs started to act up and bark. The dogs startled and scared me when they started barking without knowing at first what had just happened. Most of them barked. My dog seemed to be pretty calm, but she wasn't acting as usual, at the time. It was practice for us to control our dogs. They had the dog running around.

Next, I accidentally shut my dog's tail in the door. Ouch! I heard her and was startled! Whoa! I felt so terrible! Ian came over and talked to me, for a moment. He said, "You didn't think I was serious?" I wasn't being as careful as I should have.

Anyway, then while we were sitting in the living room, then the trainers had a dog playing and running around our dogs to help us practice distractions but probably more for control.

We went into town and worked on the route. This time, I got to finish the whole route. Well, most of it. Meredith, Kate, and I got a drink, each from the cafe. I finally got to do my route. We ate, macaroni with vegetables and meat. I decided to eat fresh cherries for my dessert! Yum!
Ahbee and her dog are at the front of a group of people and guide dogs walking down a sidewalk on a shady street.
Here we are walking in town.

After that, Kayla, Meredith, and I got a chance to look at our route on the map.  Kate and Lexi went to the four corners and just crossed only three of the corners. Later, the three of us inside, went outside and worked just like Kate and Lexi were doing.

We had been informed, "You girls will go around the kennel and practice with distractions." The only thing is that we didn't do that. Two of the girls crossed corners. We finally finished, though. We finished pretty fast and quicker than most days.

I also had an eventful afternoon! There was watermelon but I didn't get any. I was going to get watermelon but by this time, Ian and all the  girls went to the park. There's a park beyond the kennel. It was our first time to go there. There were reporters for the TV channel.

We sat around and waited. Each girl got a chance to walk and/or run with our dogs. I loved running with my dog! They gave us dessert-like treats. They were actually sweets. There were fudge brownie-like sweets, maple sugar pie stuff, and another treat. My goodness! They were delicious but rich! Anyway, I liked it! They were sweet and nice people.

Today was so exciting! It probably was the most exciting and fun day that I've experienced here in Canada.

Working on traffic listening (guest post)

Guest Post from D Jay Baillie:
This morning, after breakfast, we went into the nearby town, Saint-Hyacinthe. After setting up "headquarters" at a delightful outdoor cafe, the trainers and the O&M specialist took each student one by one to work on directionality and echolocation. The others took turns working on the tactile map as they sat at tables.

If you want to try what our young students were doing today, stand on a corner and listen to the traffic. Close your eyes and just listen and determine if the traffic is going parallel to you or perpendicular to you. Then close your eyes and depend only on your senses - mostly hearing - to be able to identify the traffic pattern. Try it with your eyes closed on a street with two way traffic/four corners. Did the car go straight next to you? Did the car turn right? Did you hear it with both ears? Was it "louder" in one ear? How did that help you understand the traffic? Did the car turn left? When would you think it was safe to cross the street if you could not see the cars?

Try it and you will just have a tiny sampling of how much concentration is needed. Our young students worked on this all morning and then went back this afternoon to do more.

Thursday, July 11

Today was the second day we've gone to town. There was waiting involved. Actually, a lot of waiting! I'm thankful for breaks, though!

We first went to town and tried walking the route Helene had shown us. We didn't or at least I didn't get to walk the whole route. I remember Ian informing me, "We won't do the whole route, right now. we won't do the three crossings." I thought after walking some of the route, "This isn't so bad."

Each girl worked with Helene, as well. She helped us listen to the traffic and help determine when it was safe to go. She helped us improve lining ourselves with the sound of the traffic, both parallel and perpendicular to it. It was great!

We ate, a small bowl of salad, chicken with pastry stuff on it and sauce, with bell peppers, and broccoli. We had a tiny break, after lunch.

We went back to work after driving a while. It was a somewhat bumpy ride, there. We listened to an English radio station! It had hit songs being played. During the ride, my friend, Kayla, and I slept just a teeny bit. I felt so much better and energetic by the time we arrived at our destination.

We waited and sat in the grass. I got to go walk with my dog and Ian. There was a sidewalk and small street crossings. I got a chance to practice walking on sidewalks with my dog. I had to determine when to go. I played with the speed of my dog and how fast I could go. I had to wait for my turn to go with Helene, but  finally I got my turn. She helped me with some more aligning with the traffic. We'd walk some and try to figure how to walk parallel with the traffic but not too far away or too close. She'd turn me so that I not going the right way. It was on purpose so that I could try to align with the traffic on my own. I'm so happy for her to be around! She knows her stuff!

Lastly, we rode back in the  car and  visited with each  other while listening to the radio. I gave my dog water. She sure did drink a bunch! She seems to be doing well, though. Anyway, it was a nice day even though it was warm.

Oh, yes!  We ate creamy soup, first. Then, we ate shrimp, rice, carrots, and snow peas, I think it was. I enjoyed today's events, even though there was a lot of thinking involved and just plain hard work!

Wednesday, July 10

 it right.

Today was quite interesting!

In the morning, we switched dogs and tried to control those dogs. We had to practice with distractions, crossing the four corners, and going around the kennel. The dog I'd gotten was a fluffy dog! He was so cute! I'd guess he was a St. Pierre or a Bernese! I loved touching his soft and fluffy fur!

We then ate lunch. We first ate salads with tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, and celery in it. For the main course, we ate pork with sauce on top, zucchini, and mushrooms, I think. Next, I was very tired and decided to take a short nap. I accidentally over slept, but I wasn't the only one who had that mistake.

Ian told us we were planning to go to town. Today wasn't very sunny. It was windy and cloudy. The trainers weren't sure about going to town. They decided on it, though. Next thing you know, it started raining! So, we had a change of plans.

We split into  two groups. First Lexi, Kayla, and I went to the kennel with Ian and Pierre while Meredith and Kate stayed with Helene inside. She showed each student the map of our route and explained the four corners.

While we were in the kennel, each girl got a chance to let her dog loose. It was a chance for them to play. Mine and Kayla's dogs stayed around us. My dog kept following me. At one point or another, Ian helped me hide. The first time, my dog was there with us. The second time, she didn't know where I was, I'm just guessing, though. I had to call her this time. The name of the game is recall. It shows each kid how to get the dog to play and come back to us. While one person has their dog off harness and leash, the others have to control their dogs.

The second exercise was with Helene. The first time going  to the kennel, each girl had been wearing  raincoats. We practically didn't need them going back to  the house. Each of us got a turn to see the four  corners or rather a four way intersection. Helene spoke to us about a four way intersection, two way  intersection, and traffic lights. We got to see a map of our route, and it  was so much easier to read on the board she used compared to the map that was already here. I actually got to make sure I understood it right.

My  friends were doing the same thing. After examining and going through the map and four corners, Lexi and I visited for a while. It was awesome! The most fun part of the day was pretending the little toy cars were on the roads. Lexi and I had a small game with the cars. I enjoyed my day, very much!

Tuesday, July 9th

Today was quite different from the past week.

We practiced distractions. There was a dog running around! They had a squeaky toy! They did these on purpose. I haven't told you, they've been doing that with our dogs. I remember them holding out or putting a cheese sandwich in front of them. They've let a dog loose, in the past.

So, anyway, we got into the van and truck or something other than the van. We had to take two vehicles. Our group wouldn't have  been able to fit in one car.

Next, we went to St. Hyacinthe. We walked a little ways until we got to a cafe. We sat outside and waited. Two girls went with a trainer for each of  them. Most of the time, one of the trainers commanded our dogs what to do. It was quite a relief! I did have to say a few commands, though. I also shook the harness when the trainer said, "Pay attention," (in French).
Ahbee and her dog check out a table at a sidewalk cafe.
Here we are, our first day in town.
It's warm outside, again today. I was told that it's not normal for here to be this hot. I waited for a while and drank iced tea in a can. I finally did my  route.

We drove back to the campus, very smoothly. We took our dogs  to the poop square. I gave my dog some water or rather let her drink some that was in her bowl. I had to refill her bowl since she was so thirsty and hot!

For lunch, first of all, I ate vegetable and noodle soup, for the appetizer. Secondly, I ate chicken on a stick, with three of them  on sticks. There were mashed potatoes and broccoli, too. Yummy!

Next, we went back to St. Hyacinthe. This time, we took the same route, but instead we went further. I had to sit around for  a long  time this afternoon. I was the last person to go on the  route. Finally, we made it back to the campus!  Wow! I was so sweaty! My dog had finally gone pee in the street of the little town.

I was so  glad we were done, after such a hot and sweaty day! I stayed in my room for just a little bit. I also remember getting myself a glass of water and then refilling it. I ate meat with noodles, mushrooms, and bell pepper. I ate two little miniature ice cream sandwiches. I also ate a kiwi for dessert! Yum! It was quite lovely!

I brushed my dog, once again. I had done it on Saturday. That's just about it for today.

Guest Post for July 8

NOTES FROM MIRA
Today was another special day here at MIRA. The girls walked with their dogs and followed the commands they have learned. They are getting every so much more comfortable with this now and the goal is to make it almost auto
matic.

They also worked at the "four corners" which is a simulated street crossing. Great patience and understanding are needed to recognize the NW/SW etc. corner and while they are working and also listening to traffic. While we are still on the campus, there are vehicles that go by from time to time and the echolocation skills are important. The trainers and the O&M specialist are always with the girls, helping them to understand each command and how it helps to keep them safe.

The people who work here are absolutely the best. They care deeply about the girls and about the dogs and about the match between the student and the dog. The corrections they make are gentle and they always explain why. These young girls are great. They ask questions, they truly want to learn and to understand.
Today, the trainers tried to tease the dogs to eat cheese treats. When the trainers held the dogs, not one dog touched the treats. The girls were told how to correct their dogs if the dog reached for the treat.

Pierre tries to tempt Ahbee's dog with a food treat.

At first, when the girls held the leashes, the dogs tried to get the food, testing the girls who were handling them. Within the hour every girl had the dog in place and showed the dog that this was not acceptable. At the end, the dogs didn't even try. Great work by our young students.

Do know that this work is hard and very serious. It is rather hot here and yet, there are no complaints from our young students, they keep asking more questions and just are so eager to learn.
It is an absolute pleasure to see this happening.

Today, for breakfast, I ate five crescent rolls, a banana, and kiwi. Yummy! I don't get crescent rolls much at all. It was like a treat for me.

Each girl took her dog out. We each did drills of practicing going right and left with the dogs. We had to work on correcting our dogs. Some of us explained how to do these exercises right after we did them. All of us went to the North bench outside the kennel. At least some of us practiced going around the kennel with our dogs. I suppose all of us girls were supposed to, but I'm not sure if that's what happened.
We walked back to the dorm or house. Each girl had to take and try to get our dogs to do some business. Mine didn't do anything. We then went to our rooms and gave them water.

We ate rice with vegetables and meat mixed in it. It was great!

Next, went to the poop square, as it's known. The girls' dogs that didn't do anything before, went to the poop square. We had leave our dogs in our rooms for a while. Later, Ian came to get me to practice and get used to the four corners. The four corners is a four way intersection. He was going to take me but then the adults had to discuss some sort of thing.

I went back into my room and played tug of war with my dogs. A couple of times, I threw the  rope. I was trying to play fetch, but that didn't seem to work. My dog did not understand I think.

Finally, after a few more disruptions, I practiced the four corners. I had to tell which streets are perpendicular to me and parallel to me. I figured out directions of where I was  facing and where the kennel and house was to me. I had to fix some mistakes, though. I, of course, veered into the street. There's a street that's bumpier and made it harder than the smoother ones. I did that  more than once.

I went back to the house and I waited for some time. I tried to  take a nap but that didn't work, either. I let Meredith visit with her mom.

I went out this time with my dog. I went out another  time. This time,I worked with my dog on crossing the four corners. Although, this time, I did three crossings, instead of four. My dog messed  up, as well. She had the same problem I'd done except to the left. I finally finished my work for the day.

I ate zucchini, potato, and celery blended soup. There was chicken breast, potatoes, and peas and carrots mixed together. There was dessert, as  well. I chose not to eat   it. It was strawberries with cream or something like that on it. That's all for now.

Day Seven/Rest Day Number 1

Today, was a great day! I took my dog outside. I ate apple and cinnamon oatmeal. It could have been the other way on the label. It could have been cinnamon and apple. Anyway, something like that. I thought it was tasty!

I visited with Meredith. She and I went downstairs and explored  part of the conference room. There's a broken braillewriter, several computers that I'm not sure really work, a table with chairs, and maps. Most of that, we knew or I knew was in there. I got us each a drink from the drink machine. I think I got iced tea for me and Pepsi for Meredith.

Pierre came today. He gave each girl a rope for a toy. The dog and each of us could play tug a war or fetch. I played with my dog and she seemed to enjoy it so much! She's strong, though. I'd say she's pretty good at tug of war.

I also spent my day playing on Garage Band and chatting with people. We had chicken burgers and fries. I, of course had kiwi for dessert. Yum!

Next, I tried to help Meredith talk to her family. It took several tries and checking to get the connection. I finally got them. By this time, Meredith couldn't hear when I called her grandpa. I had call them a few times. We finally figured out a way that worked with earphones. Wow!

I tried taking a nap but that did not work. Someone knocked on my door. I gave up trying. I took my dog outside to do business but did not get anything out of it.

I listened to music. It was more like the radio. I chatted a  few minutes with my Grandpa, too! I'm thankful for this break! I enjoyed it.

Oh, yes! I ate spaghetti and garlic bread for supper! Delicious! That's all for  today.

Day Six of Canada Experience (July 6)

Photo shows Eric St. Pierre, wearing a serious expression, talking with Ahbee.
Eric St. Pierre talks to me about my dog.

It was a half day, today. We each fed our dogs and then went to the couch for the trainers. Each of us girls visited with one another.

Eric, the founder of Mira Canada, I think, spoke to us. He helped us and assured us that he wants us to go home safely and that we might not get a dog if he thinks the way things are going at the end of the month isn't right. He also mentioned that it doesn't mean the trainers or people who speak French, doesn't necessarily mean talking bad about us kids. They informed us that we're not being talked about badly.
We got the dogs to go do their business. All of us went to the kennel and practiced going around obstacles and correcting the dogs if they do hit an obstacle. We've got special pouches for treats or food for the dogs when they obey what we said and had been working on it. During today, we each gave our dogs pieces of their dog food. My dog did pretty well.

We came back and let the dogs try going potty. We had to go and give our dogs water to drink. Next, each of us went to the living area, and the trainers had to leave around then.

We had a different cook today., He cooks really well, too. We had pizza. I chose the pizza with vegetables and  cheese on it. Then, I played  garage band for a while. I also spent some time with Meredith, one of the girls here to be trained. We had some fun together!  I just played around. Meredith and I played a hand of Uno. I won that time. It did take a long time, interestingly.

We went outside and brushed our dogs for the very first time! They sure do have a ton of hair! No kidding! That took a while, though.

Later, our dogs went outside and did their business. I'm so proud of my dog, she pooped and peed for me!
For dinner, I had chicken breast, Greek potatoes, and zucchini with bell peppers and a tiny bit of mushroom in it! Quite yummy! Oh, I forgot. I had watermelon for my lunch dessert. For dinner's dessert, I ate two kiwis cut up! Yum! Delicious! That's mainly what happened, today. Tomorrow's supposedly a day  off! Yeah! Except, Pierre will come tomorrow and give us  a rope  and show us "something." I didn't quite catch what Ian told us. Anyway, that's about  it.

Three of us sat on the couch. Someone just said something funny, I think. Kayla is laughing.

Photo, Taking a Break

We enjoy the training times, and we enjoy getting to take a rest from time to time. Here we are in our patriotic red shirts for United States Independence Day!

FAQ

FAQ about Ahbee’s new dog
Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What breed will the dog be?
A. She is a Labernese, a hybrid of Labrador and Bernese Mountain dog.

Q.  What is the dog’s name?
A. The dog’s name is not public information. Ahbee uses the dog’s name to tell it what to do and where to go, and so we do not publish it. When we have a nickname for public use, we will post it.

Q. What group or school is she attending?
A. MIRA Canada, in Montreal, Quebec. MIRA USA, with headquarters in North Carolina, is partnering with Mira Canada to provide dogs to these five young women from the United States.

Q. Isn’t she young for a guide dog? I thought you had to be 18 to get a Seeing Eye dog?
A. MIRA is the only organization in the world that provides dogs for people under 17. And Seeing Eye is actually the name of another guide dog organization.

Q. How long will she be in Canada?
A. The training is four intense weeks.

Q. How did you find out about MIRA Foundation?
A. Through a friend who got a dog last year. She was on a braille reading team with Ahbee.

Friday, July 5

Today, each girl fed her dog and had to be watched to make sure what we were doing was right.  We also had to give them water afterward.

My dog threw up at the table before I had fed her.  I hope she doesn't do that again! Kayla's did yesterday. Ian told me, "She might need to be fed two times a day." I'm still not quite sure, though.

We then went outside to try to get the dogs to go do their business. My dog did finally a little number one.

Before that though, I looked at the tactile map Mira has with Helene. She's an O and M instructor. She's quite an expert with O and M! I think she's one of the top instructors in the world! I could be wrong but that's what they said. I'm pretty sure, anyway.

All of us got lined up on the sidewalk and did drills. Well, mostly for the right turn and a little for the left turns. By this time, it was getting so hot. All of  us went to the bench on the North side of the building. We were supposed to do one lap around the kennel. I was told two and so I did two. Well, some did more than one lap.

We received nice little pouches for food or something to praise and treat the dogs to when they do what we want. I'm talking about something that needed to be fixed.

We each got introduced to the four corners. It's a plus intersection. We fracticed going from one corner to the next. I should say, "boxing" the corners," as my dad has expressed before.

We had salad for the appetiser, pork with a sauce on top, sauteed mushrooms, broccoli, and rice!  For dessert, there were ice cream sandwiches, fudgesicles, and fruit salad. I chose the ice cream sandwich! Yum!

I was pretty exhausted in the  morning. I closed my eyes for a few moments and that  seemed to do miracles! I felt more energetic after that.

We had a small discussion with the trainers and learned how to take the collar or choker on and off the dogs. My dog kept trying to put her head inside hers!  I think she felt like she wanted to work or just like it for some apparent reason. She tends to get excited when I've got the harness, collar, and/or leash.

Our dogs had to go back into our rooms and we waited until one of the trainers came to practice being the  human dog again. This time,  Pierre was the one that got me. He was the dog, and I was the handler for a very short  time. I was listening and feeling the harness to learn how it works. I'm so glad  for their help!

Oh, yes! I visited with Bob Baillie, the  founder of Mira  U.S.A.! He explained to me, "You are  now in the Mira family,"  ""You're officially one of  Bob's kids."  He continued to say, "Bob's kids are expected to listen hard, work hard, and respect the people here, because they know what they're doing."

He said, "I'm in the same world you are. I'm  blind."

Editor's note: "O and M" stands for Orientation and Mobility, and it means getting around and knowing where you are.

Thursday, July 4

Thursday, in the morning, we worked on heeling the dog when a person is guiding me or one of my friends. We also worked on the heeling correction, for keeping  them there if they don't want to.

In the afternoon, worked on walking around obstacles.

Yesterday's weather wasn't the normal type of temperatures for here. "It is warmer than usual."  That's what someone told me. So, the dogs were slower. We had to be patient with them.

Ahbee sits on a floral couch with a black dog in harness lying at her feet.
Here my dog is resting at my feet.
That's pretty much what we did yesterday.

Wednesday, July 3

On Wednesday, at breakfast, we each had to walk to our rooms without the cane. Mostly this exercise did good for us. Once breakfast had been finished, we went to the kennels and worked with dogs.

I worked with one or two dogs in the morning. We'd just walk up and down the kennel from the North entrance to the South one. So, pretty much, we worked with dogs and that was it.

For lunch, we were served chicken legs, cauliflower, and something else. (Maybe this was Wednesday, or maybe Tuesday.)

Here I am at the table with the dog I am working with today. Isn't she beautiful?
We sat on the couch for a little while and got reviewed by the trainers. We then went in the kennels to work with the dogs once more. I received a different dog. I walked around the kennel from the outside with a dog. This dog is the dog I've got right now. She's a mix of Labrador and Bernese Mountain dogs. She did run me into the same obstacle two to three times. I remember one of the times, I was startled about it and had cried a little. I didn't know she was going to do that and that the wooden ramp was there. I had to correct her.

I got to go back to the room and board if you want to call it (the dorm building). I had to stay in my room with this dog. I talked and visited with her. I petted and rubbed her. I think she enjoyed me petting and rubbing her. I stepped out for a moment and talked to my friend, because she wanted help of some kind. I went back inside my room after just a little  while.

Next, I went to dinner. Either I had shepherd's pie, meatloaf, or something else. I can't put my finger on it. We got new table assignments. I sit at the first table, if you're facing it, I'd be the one on the first corner.
My dog obeyed very well. I'm proud of her! Yea! Lastly, I had to make sure my dog's water had been dumped out before seven. I did get to spend a few minutes or so visiting with two of my friends from here.  My dog seemed very great! That's all for now.

Notes from the Blog moderator (aka Mom):
1. The girls were told that the dogs they had on Wednesday night might be the ones they would end up with, but it was not yet for sure.
2. I think we are not supposed to publish the dog's working name, so please be patient with that.
